I've been to New York a number of times and I always look forward to the shopping. The selection and the deals are almost always bigger and that always puts a smile on my face and a hop in my step. This time we thought we'd step away from ready-to-wear for a moment and take a walk in the garment district to see if we couldn't find some raw materials and boy did we ever. 39th street is a cornucopia of sewing notions and fabrics!
To be fair, we started our exploration at Mood Fabrics on 37th St. It spans over four floors and has everything your sewing hands desire. We were lost in bolts of silk, cotton and taffeta and managed to find the perfect fabric for the perfect dress. We also snagged a few extra finishing touches.
As for 39th street.... wow!
Fabric and sewing supply stores line both side of the street. You'll find everything from glittering trims, to fabrics that look like petals, to some of the most stunning brocade you've ever seen and it's all jammed into a few short city blocks. So warm up your creativity, have a good sized breakfast and head on out. I guarantee that you'll find something wonderful and for WAY less than Toronto prices. You just have to get to New York first.
