My family is of Portuguese background and although most of what we do and listen to is "Canadian", fado music has always been part of my life. As a kid, I did not understand it. Maybe it's because I had never truly had to struggle for anything or had my heart broken. As an adult with a few life experiences behind me, I've grown a new appreciation for the emotion that can be communicated through fado music regardless if you can understand the words.
Mariza is one of the greats. She can sing a traditional fado that will send shivers up your spine, cover your skin in goosebumps and bring you to tears. But she's also doing some really innovative things. She is mixing in Spanish songs and Creole music and it sounds wonderful. And I'm hoping that her creativity will attract a new audience and encourage other artists to experiment and evolve.
If you've never had the chance to hear fado music, I think Mariza is a great place to start. Here's a look at a traditional fado.
