Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa, so when I tell you that you'll be blown away by its vastness it's not an exaggeration. The river flows and then it dries up again, revealing a few drought-resistant plants. From the observation point it's hard to imagine anything survivng in this arid climate. The sun is hot and the dirt crumbles under your feet as you head out along the edge of the canyon.
If you make it out to the canyon make sure you give yourself just enough time to meditate and reflect on its grandeur. Just be sure to watch your step as you move along. There are only railings in a small obervation area, otherwise it's just a small misstep to a free-fall.
There are also some hiking trails, but they are not for the beginner and weren't for me on this trip. The conditions are harsh and the terrain is unsteady. Hiking is only permitted from May to mid-September so if you want to go for a hike, make sure you time your trip appropriately.
